For many, especially those who are fans of the Barça football team, the Camp Nou is nothing short of a symbol. Inaugurated on September 24th (the day dedicated to La Mercè, the patron saint of Barcelona) in 1957, it continues being a point of reference for football fields across Europe.

The field owes its name, Camp Nou (New Field), to the fact that the Barça team was already practising and playing matches at a previous location, the Vell Camp (Old Field). When the team signed Ladislao Kubala as one of their players, the club’s board of directors decided that if it was to have big stars it would also need a great field.

Thus, preparations began to build what was then considered a very ambitious project. Even today the Camp Nou continues being the largest (in terms of spectator capacity) football stadium in Europe, seating up to 98,600 spectators.

Due to its size, the Camp Nou is not only site of the Barça team’s victories and defeats. It also serves as a venue for a variety of different events. In the past, concerts by performers such as Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen were staged at the Camp Nou.

At the FC Barcelona facilities, visitors can also tour the Barça Museum, dedicated entirely to the club’s history. On display at the museum are photographs of all the players that ever donned the team’s jersey as well as the only European Cup ever won by the team. For some this achievement already lies too far in the past.
