This is one of the most popular athletic facilities in Barcelona, and site of the city's glorious inauguration of the 1992 Olympic Games. For a few minutes, the entire world turned their eyes to this spot and watched. Later on during the Olympic Games, it was the stage for some of the athletic records achieved that year.

The current Olympic Stadium is actually a redesigned version of a previous one that was located at the site since 1929. It was given new infrastructure and high-tech equipment, and its seating capacity was increased to accommodate up to 56,000 people (with the addition of professional stands the seating capacity can reach up to 77,000). This resulted in the UEGA recognising the facility as a five-star stadium.

Much like the Palau Sant Jordi, the Olympic Stadium also hosts a variety of events, both athletic and social. Nowadays, one of the two Catalonian teams that play in the first division of the Spanish League, the RCD Espanyol, holds football matches at the stadium.

The artists and architects involved in the design of the stadium make it so much more than a mere sports facility. The facade was largely recovered from the previous stadium and done by Pere Doménech i Roure. The front section was sculpted by Vicenç Navarro, and the statues that decorate the main entrance were crafted by Pau Gargallo.
