The Cinc d'Oros (Five of Gold) is the curious name bestowed upon the intersection of Passeig de Grácia and Avenida Diagonal. The name refers to the original design of the square, which resembled the five of gold card in a deck of Spanish playing cards. At the centre of the intersection sits an obelisk (commonly known as the pencil) surrounded by four, large streetlights, one in each corner.
The place has been redesigned several times over the years and has served as the stage for a number of important events in the city's history. Nowadays it is an important thoroughfare that transports a constant stream of pedestrians, buses, cars etc. The square doesn't necessarily demand a visit in its own right, but it is easy to come across this intersection on a number of occasions. Therefore, it is always interesting to know its origins.
