Barceloneta is the old fishermen´s quarter of Barcelona where the old port meets the beach. The area has among the best fish restaurants in town and a long sandy beach which is popular all year round with sunbathers, windsurfers, joggers and cyclists and particularly lively in summer when the beach bars (chiringuitos) open up.
Set slightly apart from the city centre, Barceloneta offers a refreshing break from the heat and traffic. This residential area has a very local feel and is characterised by its grid of narrow streets of terraced buildings with washing hanging over their balconies.
At the end of the main road, Paseo Joan de Borbon, you´ll see a tower - with a panoramic restaurant on the top floor - where you can take the cable car across the port to Montjuic mountain.
You are also just 15 minutes walk from the gothic quarter and its numerous attractions. It´s also a picturesque and peaceful walk to the Ramblas along the water´s edge to the statue of Columbus.
The marina is located here in the old port with all the yachts of the rich and famous of Barcelona. The impressive Catalunya History Museum overlooks the marina, with stunning views views across the city and the sea from its fourth floor cafe terrace and a row of upmarket fish and paella restaurants beneath which have one of the best locations in town.
In the middle of the port is the modern Maremagnum complex, with shops, bars, restaurants, the biggest aquarium in Europe and an Imax cinema.
