Barcelona has always been at the crossroads
of different cultures, the result of which is a vibrant blend of customs and
traditions. Historically, it has also been at the forefront of avant-garde
movements in art, architecture and society, a spirit that hasn’t waned over the
years. In embracing the many cultural influences and celebrating its innovative
character, Barcelona has also become a wonderful destination for
great food. Visitors and locals alike can have a different international dining
experience almost every day, be it traditional Catalan cuisine, vegetarian
delicacies, treats from places as far-flung as India and Japan or as close by
as Italy and France, Basque tapas, Middle Eastern snacks, freshly squeezed
juices, organic buffets, meats, cheeses or fish…whatever your culinary desires
may be, Barcelona can probably fulfil them.
As in other big cities, it is difficult to
avoid fast and pre-prepared food. However, Barcelona has an entire culture built around
the sit-down meal. A whole new generation of chefs has made an enormous
contribution to this culture by taking Catalan cuisine to new heights, in terms
of both modernity and popularity. For example, it suffices to mention Ferran
Adriá, the driving force behind the El Bulli restaurant (located in Roses,
Girona but with a workshop in Barcelona), who is considered one of the world's
best chefs as well as the many lesser-known but highly inventive chefs who have
given Barcelona its fabled reputation for eclectic fusion cuisine.
Being a seaside town, Barcelona is also known for its exceptional seafood. The number of restaurants
specialising in underwater treats are as varied as the city itself – light
Mediterranean fare, Spanish classics like paella or local favourites like
fideuá, even Japanese sushi. Although there are good seafood restaurants
throughout the city, no place is quite as appropriate as La Barceloneta or the
many authentic spots along the city’s seafront promenade.
With this in mind, deciding to go out for dinner opens up two distinct options:
a quick bite to satisfy hunger or a drawn-out, exquisite meal. The decision
will probably depend on preference (and budget), but either way it is always
good to set out with a few promising leads. Our restaurant guide is a good place to start. The listings can be
searched by neighbourhood or type of cuisine and provide all the
essential information you need to pick a place to start your culinary
adventures. Some of the restaurants also feature reviews by our resident
critic, who has put on a few kilos just to make sure you get some insider
information on where to eat and what to expect!
We also collaborate with several outstanding
restaurants to bring you tempting special
offers, such as a complimentary bottle of wine at La Locanda, a popular Italian restaurant with some of the best pizzas in town. Another intriguing
option is a tour of the Botanical Gardens and a world cuisine tasting menu
served at the elegant El Lliure
Restaurant. If you are searching for that perfect place to host a gathering,
party or other group event, make sure to check out the recommendations in our Venues for Groups section. Lovers of
all things chic might enjoy a birthday party at the Red Lounge, a sumptuous blend of North African and Middle Eastern
influences, whereas the Miranda del
Museo, with its beautiful views across the marina, is ideal for a more
elegant affair. Finally, anyone seeking a fun-loving place for a hen or stag
party should definitely check out the California-themed Baja Beach Club.
